By Anna Dimitrova We live in complex times. Everything functions in between the chaos and order and nothing is quite what is seems. Problems are easy to spot on the surface but digging deeper reveals a maze of interconnected factors which make it hard to understand their real causes. We live in a time of transformation where the old models do not work anymore, where the systems designed before no longer serve our needs to their best and where there are new types of issues- social, economic, environmental…It is clear that solving one problem at a time would not be effective. In order to deal with this complexity we need to spot the root causes and to challenge the existing systems... Read More

By Laila Said. On a recent photography trip to Siwa, I was lucky enough to cross paths with a good friend, Galal Zekri-Chatila. Galal is about half-way through his self-appointed challenge to cycle around Egypt. Read more about that here . On our first night,we invited Galal over for dinner and were surprised to see him walk in with Faris Hassanein, the mastermind behind Hawyet Siwa - an NM incubated social enterprise. Faris is a freelance graphic designer, photographer and social entrepreneur, who left Cairo’s bustling city life to settle in Siwa — a lifestyle that leaves the Egyptian pseudo hipster drooling with envy. Our December kicked off with an awesome Monthly Monday which promised to make us more productive. Yeah right. Countless apps, websites and accessories promise to make us more organised but never really manage to clear the clutter of our day to day lives. Would GTD prove any different? Getting Things Done (GTD) — “The Art of Stress-free Productivity” is a time-management method described in a bestselling book by David Allen. It was presented to us by Adham AbdelSalam — a man who does a million things, including stand-up comedy, TV and radio presenting. And he manages it all with time to spare, he assured us. Check out these pictures, tweets and quotes to get an idea of what our GTD Monthly Monday was all about!... Read More

Last Friday, NM ran a full day of intense marketing and communications training for social enterprises looking to gain insight on how to market themselves more effectively. -------------------------------------------------- The first workshop was led by Dr. Ahmed Tolba — chair of Management Department at the AUC School of Business, and one of the founders of Nahdet El Mahrousa After a brief history of marketing — and a slightly baffling quote from Henry Ford to break the ice -- (“You can have any colour you want for your car as long as it’s black”) — Dr. Tolba took us straight to marketing in the present day. "Sales-orientation is an out-dated concept... Read More

Last weekend, around 20 Egyptian professionals got together at the French Cultural Centre in Mounira: an oasis of cultivation in the midst of frantic downtown Cairo, and the ideal setting for a workshop that closely gathered so diverse a group of entrepreneurs. Some participants currently lead or are part of incubated social enterprises at Nahdet El Mahrousa, others are involved in enterprises from the local start-up ecosystem. Despite the obvious variance in age and experience, the entrepreneurs were brought together by a shared desire to refine, revitalise or realise their own projects. The range was exceptional: origami, bike-sharing, bio-gas and handicrafts to name but a few... Read More
